From Polyester to Purpose: How Toxic Clothing Opened My Eyes to Non-Toxic Living
It All Started with a YouTube Interview
I was sitting on the couch one night, nursing my first son Caden, when I stumbled across a YouTube interview about toxins in everyday products. I expected to hear about food or skincare — but what caught me completely off guard was the discussion on clothing.
Toxic clothing? I had never even considered that what I was wearing (or dressing my baby in) could be harming us.
The Hormone Disruption No One Talks About
As I listened, I learned that synthetic fabrics like polyester, acrylic, and nylon are often treated with toxic chemicals like:
Formaldehyde (to prevent wrinkles)
Azo dyes (used for color but may release carcinogens)
Phthalates and flame retardants
PFAs (used in water-resistant clothing)
What shocked me most was how these chemicals can leach into our bodies, especially through sweat — and how they can disrupt our hormones, affecting everything from mood to fertility and even potentially lead to other health concerns like cancer.
Clothing and Fertility: A Personal Concern
At the time, I had just given birth to my first child and knew we wanted to grow our family. I started noticing that almost every woman I knew was struggling with fertility issues—many going through IVF or dealing with hormone imbalances.
While I hadn’t faced those challenges myself, I couldn’t ignore the possibility that environmental toxins—including those in clothing—could play a role. I realized I had a responsibility to start making more informed choices.

God's Wisdom and Natural Fabrics
As I researched more about non-toxic clothing, I noticed how often the Bible references natural materials — cotton, wool, and especially linen. These fabrics aren’t just old-school; they’re God-designed: breathable, gentle, durable, and non-toxic.
Even in ancient times, God gave instructions for His people to wear pure, breathable fabrics — not ones that would cause sweating or discomfort. There’s something beautiful about how that still aligns with what we know today about supporting the body.
God designed these fabrics for a reason. Linen is antibacterial and breathable. Wool regulates body temperature. Organic cotton is soft and safe for sensitive skin.
When I looked at these choices through a biblical lens, I saw that God’s design wasn’t just spiritual—it was practical and protective, too.
How I Started Swapping Out Toxic Clothing
I didn’t go and toss everything out all at once — and you don’t have to either. I started small, with what I could afford and replaced more and more as time went on.
Here’s how I made the switch:
I looked for clothes made from organic cotton, linen, or wool
I always washed new clothes before wearing them
I paid attention to labels, avoiding anything labeled “wrinkle-free,” “stain-resistant,” or synthetic blends
I began choosing brands with GOTS or OEKO-TEX certifications
It was a process—but one that made me feel more confident in the choices I was making for my health and my family.
This Shift Changed More Than My Closet
That one YouTube interview led me down a rabbit hole I’ll never regret. It taught me to question, to research, and find healthier alternatives to well pretty much everything, lol. It also brought me closer in my walk with God because as you read through the bible you realize that he always pointed us to the things that are best for us. From the food we eat to the clothes on our bodies.
Switching to non-toxic living isn’t just about avoiding chemicals—it’s about honoring your body, your family, and your faith with every decision.
